What skill level is this skate?
It is an intermediate level street skate of about 8-10 miles which finishes around 11AM so that participants may continue skating with the Advanced Skate when it departs from the White House.
This skate maintains pace designed to be a workout for an average street skater. The
terrain includes some moderate hills such as Capitol Hill and may
include high-traffic areas such as Georgetown.
There are seeral stops to regroup and before tricky turns. If
you can keep up with our Friday night skate, and get to the end without feeling tired or
exhausted, you can probably keep up with this skate. Skate Patrol assists with this skate and
helps keep the group together. Difficulty can vary widely depending on the route chosen
by the leader.
Hills: Because of Washington's moderately hilly terrain, one should have mastered at least two kinds of braking (e.g., heel braking, T-stopping, power slides, snowplowing, etc.) and be able to brake on steep hills. Ask Skate Patrol or the skate leader for alternate routes if you do not feel comfortable on the terrain.
Maneuverability and control at all times is very important as the skate travels on roadways which contain hazards, such as cars, bad pavement, pedestrians and other skaters. The ability to stop or avoid obstacles is critical to the ability to skate on public streets.
Skate Area: See Boundaries for an intermediate skate for an idea of where you might go. These boundaries were established as a guideline to skate leaders to maintain a consistant level of difficulty.

Assisting the skate: (During daylight savings time only, Roughly April through October) Uniformed Volunteers from The National Skate Patrol come out to help skaters enjoy themselves and have a safe skate. Please respect and follow directions from Skate Patrol. You may see them direct traffic, assist with first aid, offer skating advice, mark turns, announce obstacles, act as sweep, and provide entertainment. |
