George,
What if you run into a monster while you are out skating and you need to hook it? Then what?

Subject: [SkateDC] Hydration Pack (without monster hook and adjustable front straps to hold extra gear)
For those thinking about purchasing a hydration pack:
I just purchased a hydration pack at Costco for $19.99.
It is a High Sierra Scout 2-Liter model.
Wanted to show you a picture of this bad boy, but I was unable to find the "Scout" model at www.highsierrasport.com. However, for all intents and purposes it appears to be exactly the same as their "Kahuna 70" model, EXCEPT that the Scout DOES NOT have the "monster hook and adjustable front straps to hold extra gear." In all other particulars it appear to be identical. What may have happened is that the "Kahuna 70" was re-branded by High Sierra as the Scout model (minus the "monster hook...") for sale by Costco. It is not available from Costco online, only from one of their stores. So sadly you need to be a Costco member to purchase this item.
Here are the "Kahuna 70" model specifications and picture:

>From Costco it is available in Black, Blue, Red, and possibly one other color (maybe Tan?). Not sold online.
I think the Scout will probably satisfy your hydration needs (2-Liter/67.6-Ounce capacity) and your fetish for zippers, pockets, velcro, hooks, and adjustable straps. The $19.99 price seems to be less than half of the "sale price" I've seen advertised from other retailers. So unless you really want that "monster hook and adjustable front straps to hold extra gear," which to repeat -- the Scout model doesn't have, it seems like a pretty good deal to me if you're in the market for a hydration pack.
If you really want one of these things and aren't a Costco member give me $22 and tell me the color you want (Black, Blue, Red, or Maybe Tan*) and I'll get one for you. Your $22 covers the cost of the pack ($19.99), the 6% Maryland state sales tax ($1.20), and my fee for the aggravation ($0.81). It will cost you an extra $10 (call it an aggravation bonus) if you point out to me that the hydration pack you get from me doesn't have a "monster hook and adjustable front straps to hold extra gear" like the one in the picture of the "Kahuna 70."
I'll be leading this Sunday's Intermediate Skate (3/21/10). I tend to do most of the Sunday Intermediate skates whether or not I'm leading. (I haven't figured out how to lead a Sunday Intermediate Skate without actually, you know, doing it. But I'm working on it and I'll let you know what I come up with. Probably involves a cell phone, traffic cameras, and a fearless guinea pig on skates...)
Cheers,
George
* "Maybe Tan" is a color that looks exactly like Tan if my memory is correct. Or it could be some other color entirely, but for some reason I remembered it as Tan. Caveat emptor.
