A bunch of special skates are coming up...
Sunday (7/4/10) 4th of July Fireworks Skate, leaves the White House at 7 PM, led by Carl Ford.
An easy skate around town before getting into position to view the fireworks, which should launch around 9:15 PM. Following the fireworks, drinking and eating at a location to be determined. Most likely we will be watching the fireworks from the banks of the Tidal Basin near the FDR Memorial.
A skate every Saturday for the next four Saturdays:
Saturday (7/3/10) Formal 40 Skate, meets 7:30 AM and leaves 8:00 AM from the Red Caboose (http://www.skatedc.org/resources/skatespots/caboose.html) in Vienna, VA, led by Jubran Selim.
We skate the Washington & Old Dominion Trail (W&OD). All levels are welcome. The typical format is to skate 20 miles out and then 20 miles back so if 40 miles doesn't suit you just pick your own turn-around point for the distance of your choice, greater or lesser. Typically the group winds up broken up into several smaller groups of similar ability/speed. Bikes, skateboards, power stilts, etc. are welcome to join. For those who want to do lunch afterward, there is a lot to choose from in Vienna [for the masochists there's always Vienna Inn!]. No "formal" lunch plans, we'll just wing it on the day of the event. Saturday (7/10/10) BWI Loop Skate, meets 2 PM at Thomas A. Dixon, Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, Glen Burnie, MD, led by Patricia Andrasik.
The second Saturday of each month, Patricia leads a skate on the BWI Loop Trail. This is the B/A/D Balto/Annap/DC Inline Skaters Monthly Meetup and more information is available here: http://www.meetup.com/inlineskating-109 There is no cost and all are encouraged to it a try. It's a fun skate. It is 10.7 miles long. Starts at Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Observation Area (794
Dorsey Rd, Glen Burnie, MD 21061) Directions to the

Saturday (7/17/10) Skate Across Maryland (twice) Skate, leaves at 11 AM from Hancock, MD, led by George Marinkovich.
We start in Hancock, Maryland, skate over to West Virginia, skate back into Maryland, up into Pennsylvania, and then back (down, yeah!) into Maryland. When we finish we will have traversed the State of Maryland twice, which visiting another sate (West Virginia) and a commonwealth (Pennsylvania). It's a long way to Hancock, MD, to just skate across Maryland twice, so for those looking for additional skating (or perhaps instead of the SAM) my recommendation is to skate the scenic western half of the WMRT (or as much of it as you want). Contact me about carpooling options. Directions to start location, Western Maryland Rail Trail Parking Lot on East Main Street (Rt. 144) slightly west and across the street from Center Street, Hancock, MD: http://tinyurl.com/WMRT-parking-lot
Saturday (7/24/10) Philly Landskaters DC Skate, leaves at 1 PM from the White House, led by K O Miller.
See the city from a whole new perspective. K O from Philly will be leading the skate, an 18 mile intermediate skate around town. A busload
of Landskaters from Philadelphia will be coming to town for this skate.
All are welcome to join us. We will be visiting Froggy Bottom Pub for
food and drink at the conclusion of the skate (around 4 PM).
As always all our skating events are available on the WAR Calendar at www.skatedc.org. Our regularly scheduled skates and some special skates are available on our meetup page: http://www.meetup.com/Washington-Area-Roadskaters/ And of course, late breaking news often comes out first on our skate email list, which you can subscribe to on our website www.skatedc.org (but if you're reading this, there's a pretty good chance you already subscribe to the skate list ;-). Finally, weather related skate updates can be had by following skatewash on twitter.
Happy skating,
George
