First, the weather this weekend in DC promises to be perfect for skating, that is to say, completely rain-free. Enjoy! I guess setting up that Twitter account is like carrying around an umbrella, it never seems to rain when you do.
It's summer, hot and humid, so I recommend skating with water. That's the easiest way to stay hydrated. However, there are a number of water fountains on the Friday Night Skate route if you seek them out: at the Capitol, along the Mall, before you get to the Washington Monument (on 15th St.), just as you're about to leave the WW II Memorial, inside the Lincoln Memorial, and at intervals all along Ohio Drive.
Second, Rodney will be leading the Friday Night Skate this week.
Since I don't think Rodney is subscribed to this email list, I can speak freely. But Rodney, if you actually are on this list, please skip over the next paragraph, or my nefarious scheme won't work ;-)
Rodney is a great guy, a great skater, and would make a terrific skate leader. He's also one of the Friday Night Skate regulars. It would be awesome to have Rodney lead the Friday Night Skate on a regular basis (say once a month). So, assuming he doesn't lose everyone on the way to Froggy Bottom Pub tomorrow night and/or skate everyone into the Potomac River, please remember to thank Rodney for leading the skate. You can be as profuse and grandiloquent as you wish; over the top is baseline for Rodney! Who knows?
Maybe he'll be inspired to lead other skates.
OK Rodney, if you're on the list, you can start reading again.
I'd like to have group of about four people lead the Friday Night Skate on a rotating basis. I'll take one of the slots, so we have room for three more. If you're interested in one of the other slots, please let me know. There's really no downside to leading skates (especially true of the FNS as there's no preparation whatsoever), and the upside is that you may just find you enjoy it.
Third, we don't (yet) have a confirmed skate leader for the Sunday Intermediate skate. However, almost everyone on the Sunday Intermediate skate has experience with the Friday Night Skate route. My suggestion is that y'all skate the Friday Night Skate route on Sunday morning. I hope one of you will step up to lead the skate, but as nearly everyone will be familiar with the route, you can probably just follow the consensus of the herd. The distance with Hains Point included is about 12 miles, a good distance for an intermediate skate, and the sites will look a little different at 9 in the morning than they do after 7 at night.
Fourth, Kent will be leading one of his fast-paced workouts on the 11 AM Advanced Skate.
I think we had someone (Jackeline, fresh from Eddy's SkateFarm) skate both the Intermediate and Advanced skates last Sunday. That's a lot of skating!
Happy skating,
George
