[SkateDC] Fwd: Recommendation to begin skating

Hi Wendy,

I guess the best advice to begin skating in the winter is to skate indoors.  I'm not much of an indoor skater, but there are indoor skaters on this list and they probably have places to recommend.

On a nice day you might find some skaters doing their thing at the Haines Point loop on Ohio Drive in East Potomac Park.  Then there're always the trails, Capital Crescent Trail in DC, W&OD Trail in Virginia, and the BWI Trail in Maryland.

Finally, if you are willing to give an intermediate group skate a try there are sometimes intermediate skates that leave from the White House on Sunday at 11 AM in the winter.  The Washington Area Roadskaters have regular skates year round on Wednesday at 7 PM and Sunday at 11 AM.  Of course, we are affected by the weather so sometimes these regularly scheduled skates will be canceled due to cold or snow or wet conditions.  Stay tuned to this list for announcements of upcoming skates.

Once daylight savings time starts in the spring, we begin our full regular skate schedule of Friday Night at 7 PM, Sunday Intermediate and Advanced skates at 11 AM, and the Wednesday Night at 7 PM.  All skates start at the White House.  The Friday Night Skate is best suited to beginners.  The Sunday Intermediate Skate best suited to intermediate skaters.  Also there are free skate lessons given at Rock Creek Park on Saturday when daylight savings time is in effect.

Patricia leads an intermediate skate around BWI typically the second Saturday of the month (look it up at meetup.com, B/A/D Inline Skaters), although their next meeting is an ice skating event on the 23rd of January.

Indoor rinks are probably the best bet for winter skating and I'll leave you in the capable hands of skaters on the list who do that more often than I do.

Glad you found us!

Cheers,
George

Happy New Year to everyone!

I'm new to the mailing list and to inline skating as well.  Can anyone
recommend or suggest ways that I can try learning how to skate although its
cold outside. I didn't get an opportunity to work towards this goal in the
summer, but would like to begin now.

Thanks a lot!
Wendy
