Tonight coming home from the open rehearsal of The Alchemist at the Landsburgh I ran across a store called the Ticket Place (www.ticketplace.org) that advertised having discounted advance tickets and half-price day-of-performance tickets.  I haven't used them before, but assuming I don't win a free ticket, will give them a try for the LADO performance.  You get an advance ticket, best available seating, for about half price.  Anyone have favorable or unfavorable experience with ticketplace.org?  It's neat that DC finally has something like the half-price day-of ticket booth in Times Square.  Maybe's it's been here for quite some time, but it's only now come to my attention.

Cheers,
George

George, This is awesome!  THANK YOU for yet another great find!!!

In Split, Croatia, during the annual summer festival (mid July to mid Aug, I believe), they have these shows outdoors in the main square every night (free); I saw such folk music, dance, etc. performances in Split in August last year.  It is extremely impressive and highly entertaining.

Cheers!

Enter to win a pair of tickets to see "LADO: 60 Years of Celebrating Traditional Croatian Music and Dance", presented by Strathmore, Friday, October 9, 2009 at 8:00 PM at the Music Center at Strathmore.

This brilliant company of dancers, singers, and musicians bring centuries of tradition to life, in swirling, spectacular performances—a vivid “living museum” that features more than 1200 costumes, some more than 100 years old. “There is nothing more moving. An image of pure style and class” (The New York Times ).

LADO is an ancient Slavic word frequently used as a refrain in old ceremonial songs from north-western Croatia, and is a synonym for words meaning "good", "lovable and "dear".
LADO, the Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia was founded in 1949 in Zagreb as a professional national ensemble.

The ensemble’s 36 brilliant dancers, who are also excellent singers, can easily transform the folk dance group into a representative folk choir, while its 15 superb musicians can play some forty different instruments.

LADO’s impressive choreographic and musical repertoire honours original folk art and has brought the ensemble international fame. Because of the ensemble’s unique collection of valuable authentic national costumes (more than 1000), each concert is a fashion show of traditional Croatian costumes.

Maybe the best way to describe LADO is to repeat how the ensemble was described in one of its reviews: LADO’s performance tastes like water from a spring - clear, refreshing and vital, its image reflecting the individual, the whole nation and its culture.

Cheers,
George
