It's time for the Fall Edition of Walking Town DC:
Saturday, September 19, 2009 - Sunday, September 20, 2009
Location: Across the City
"Enjoy a weekend of more than 100 free walking tours (and several bicycling tours and one sailing tour as well) in neighborhoods across DC!
Discover the cultural capital's vibrant street life and little-known
historic treasures with professional and volunteer neighborhood guides"
Some tours require reservations (tickets) so act quickly before they are sold out.

One tour that I think will sell out very soon is the Schooner Sailing Adventure (a group of us is going on the Saturday tour and at the moment there is room for more, but there is one on Sunday as well should the Saturday sailing fill up):
Schooner Sailing Adventure
Saturday, September 19
1 - 3 pm
Meet and end at entrance to Cantina Marina, 600 Water Street, SW
Nearest Metrorail/Metrobus: Circulator CW or Waterfront-SEU Metro station (Green line)
Reservations required: Online
Enjoy a unique and relaxing view of Washington, DC from the deck of a
classic-rigged sailing ship! Sail aboard the 65-foot schooner “American
Spirit” out of the Southwest Waterfront area. For more than two hundred
years, this waterfront has been a working community and the center of
the city as envisioned by Pierre L’Enfant. Learn about its vibrant
history while sailing its shores. Led by Phil Weeks and Carl Cole and presented by the National Maritime Heritage Foundation.
Note: This cruise is only valid on September 19 and 20 and cannot be rescheduled due to weather cancellations.
I highly recommend the following tours, which I have taken in the past (in descending order of enthusiasm -- they're all good, but some are definitely better than others):
Spies of Georgetown Walking Tour (professional guide formerly in the intel business)
History before History: The Geologic Saga of Washington, DC (geology professor)
Scandals, Scoundrels, & Scallywags: The Seamier Side of Georgetown (actor in costume)
Courage! The Civil War in Washington (actor in costume)
A Free Black Woman: Elizabeth Keckly (actor in costume)
Georgetown
Chinatown
Rediscovering Mount Vernon
You're welcome to join me on any of these tours this go round:
Saturday
9 - 11 am: John Russell Pope Treasure Hunt (reservations required)
11 am - 12:30 pm: Blagden Alley and Naylor Court
1 - 3 pm: Schooner Sailing Adventure (reservations required)
4 - 5:30 pm: Southwest Washington and Waterfront Development
Sunday
10 - 11 am: The Battle that Saved Washington (reservations required)
1:30 - 2:30 pm: Lincoln and the Civil War in Foggy Bottom

Enjoy,
George
