40 miles to Purcellville, VA, and east about 5 miles down into the Shirlington
neighborhood of Arlington, VA. With a bit of luck (or a local guide), from Shirlington
you can actually make your way down to the Potomac river and pick up the
Mt. Vernon trail. This goes south for I think 17 miles or so to Mt. Vernon (though
last I heard the surface was rough for skating) and north for maybe 3-4 miles,
where, miraculously, you end up at Key Bridge again and can return to Georgetown.

There are a couple of web sites that have maps of the W&OD, sorry I don't
remember any URLs, but most if not all of the trails I mentioned are rails-to-trails
and should be well documented.

And a final option, if you're in town over a weekend, get a map of Rock Creek Park
and find Parking Lot 6, many local speedskaters meet there at 10 a.m. Saturdays
and Sundays for laps of the 3 1/2 mile section of Beach Drive that's closed to
traffic on the weekend. Plenty of A2Aers there.
