Hi all,
I am forwarding an email I received from one of my former PhD students. She
is completely reliable, and the story she tells is so tragic. Since the
group has been so involved in raising money for leukemia and lymphoma I
thought someone might know of an organization that could help this child
suffering from a rare cancer. Any personal donations of course would also
be greatly appreciated. This is the message:

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Mahmut is a good friend of mine from High school. We have been good friends
during our PhD. studies while he was getting his degree at Cornell. He is
now a professor of Psychology at Sabanci University in Istanbul. His 2 year
old baby girl Nehir is diagnosed with a form of pediatric cancer and needs a
bone marrow transplant which is a very expensive operation. and they are in
urgent need of help for fund raising. if you can help in anyway, or know
people who might be able to help it would be greatly appreciated. Please
find below more information about Nehir's situation and how you can help.

Nehir Bayazit needs your help. In November 2008, when she was 19 months
old, Nehir was diagnosed with stage IV high risk neuroblastoma, a form of
pediatric cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. Since then she has
been treated by her physicians at Texas Children’s Hospital with intensive
chemotherapy and surgery. Currently she is receiving radiation therapy.
Nehir has touched the lives of many and she keeps amazing us all with her
ability to fight the toughest struggle in her life, in the only way she
knows, with innocence. Unfortunately, therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma
results in cures only about 30% of the time. Therefore, Nehir’s physicians
highly recommended a bone marrow transplant to increase her chances of
survival.
Because of the extraordinary expense of transplantation, funding this
life-saving operation is a monumental task. Nehir is uninsured and her
family has been struggling to pay for her treatment. To help offset Nehir’s
uninsured costs, family and friends have started a fundraising campaign in
her honor through the National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF). NTAF is a
nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for
over 25 years. All contributions are administered by NTAF exclusively for
uninsured transplant-related expenses. Donations are tax-deductible to the
full extent of the law.
You may use any of the methods listed below to make a contribution to
Nehir's fight against cancer.
*Online Donations*
You can now quickly and safely donate to the National Transplant Assistance
Fund (NTAF) online using your credit card. Visit www.transplantfund.org and
type "Bayazit" in the yellow box on the left. At the bottom of the page
just click "Contribute
now<http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/link.php?type=site&source=MMRF_Donations_Page&destination=http%3A%2F%2F321cure.themmrf.org%2Fdonate>"
and choose Nehir Bayazit to enter the amount you would like to donate.
*Cash Donations* *
*For check donations just make out a check to the "NTAF South-Central Bone
Marrow Transplant Fund" and write "In honor of Nehir Bayazit" in the memo
section of check. Send your checks to "NTAF 150 N. Radnor Chester Road ,
Suite F-120 Radnor , PA 19087
You can also call toll free 800-642-8399 to make donations with your credit
card.
*Matching Gifts*
You can multiply your donations for Nehir through your company's "Matching
Gifts" plan. Many companies will contribute to worthy nonprofits on behalf
of their employees through "Matching Gifts" programs. Start by contacting
your personnel office or human resources office. It generally handles the
processing of matching gifts and often has company forms that you complete
and submit to the MMRF. Please let your employer know you support National
Transplant Assistance Fund in honor of Nehir Bayazit. Ask them to look for
National Transplant Assistance Fund INC (ID 0016006). Encouraging your
company to become a corporate donor may be easier than you think. And, no
matter what the size of the donation, it all adds up.
It’s never easy to ask for help and now is certainly no exception. At times
like this, the assistance of family, friends and the community is crucial to
help ensure a positive outcome. Your prayers and support are greatly
appreciated. Please consider asking your friends, family members, coworkers,
schools, houses of worship and community organizations to also support this
worthy cause.
On behalf of the Bayazit family, thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Sincerely,
Met Altan and Gokce Baser
