Sorry, some misunderstanding as to which power plant, power plant is
near the beltway and is primarily a sewage treatment plant that burns
methane to generate power (at least that is my understanding).
It was reconstructed out of existence when they were modifying the
beltway, and doing work on the power (and sewage treatment) plant. Use
to be able to take the bike path to Eisenhower, then there was a bike
path off Eisenhower to Duke. Back in the day Eisenhower did not have
much traffic.
Path went around sewage/power plant, now it is part of power plant
property (you can see gates blocking access). You would access it on
Payne street.

You would access Duke street From Mill Road, there was a tunnel right
under telegraph road and mill street, I think it's still there.

Path comes out here (left side of telegraph) and goes up to Duke, where
you can access Generous Georges (short stint on sidewalk).

There is Chadwicks, almost right next the bike shop on The Strand, near
the water, next to the Dandy dock, easily accessible via bike path.

2 cents
And of course Generous Georges, but difficult to get to since they
destroyed the bike path next to the power plant.
2 cents.

The National Marathon is taking place this Saturday. A map of the
route is at:
http://www.nationalmarathon.com/Map_2009.asp
There may some interesting skating opportunities. The 9th Street
Tunnel is on the route. That's not a place you get to skate very
often! If you have an interest in cheering on runners, the section in
Anacostia Park could use some spectators, I'm sure.
I am running the full marathon and I believe that Jacques is running
it too. Come out and see us!

As you know Skate DC Weekend is fast approaching over the horizon and
the Saturday (5/2/09) Skate this year is going to Old Town Alexandria.?
While in Old Town we'll be eating lunch.? So, I'll bet you can see where
this is headed:? we are looking for any recommendations you care to
share about nice places to have lunch in Old Town on a Saturday.?
Remember, most of us will be skating to Alexandria and all of us will be
skating back, so the restaurant should be casual or at least tolerant of
people who look like they just finished skating.?? A place with great
food and relatively inexpensive prices would be ideal.? Bonus points for
being close to the intersection of King and Union Streets.
Some possibilities to get the ball rolling:
Pita House (Middle Eastern and Vegetarian)
407 Cameron Street
Alexandria, VA 22314
Red Mei (Asian)
602 King St
Alexandria, VA 22314
Hard Times (Chili)
1404 King St
Alexandria, VA 22314
La Piazza (Italian)
535 E Braddock Rd
Alexandria, VA 22314
Scoop Grill (Ice Cream)
110 King St.
Alexandria, VA 22314
Ideas?? Recommendations?? Suggestions?? Comments??? All are welcome.
Thanks,
George

Thanks for the response to the Alexandria Old Town request.? More
suggestions are welcome.
Now, we're looking for restaurant recommendations in DC for Skate DC
Weekend, especially places easily reached from the event hotel:
Homewood Suites Washington DC
1475
Massachusetts Ave NW
Washington,
DC 20005
Most likely people would be going to this restaurant on Saturday evening
(5/2/09).? I seriously doubt anyone will be on skates and people will
have had the opportunity of cleaning up to some degree, so unlike for
Alexandria, we needn't limit ourselves to casual dining places.? Great
food, reasonable prices, relatively easy to get to from Homewood Suites
(closest metro is McPherson Square).?? Any places unique to DC that may
be of interest to our out-of-town guests?
