[SkateDC] Atlas shrugs

Carl,

It's unfortunate that there has been any excrement donation, and to the extent that I have contributed to such an activity, I apologize.  Of all the people associated with this club, the person least deserving of excrement donation is Carl Ford -- the essential truth of this observation is particularly germane when you consider the nature of his home renovation project.  It's quite reasonable for someone to object to being treated like a Hank Reardon character,so again, sorry for contributing to that.

For a very long time Carl has served this skate club, doing work that is often behind-the-scenes and which doesn't always get the recognition or appreciation it merits.  Carl is, I believe, the longest-serving president WAR has ever had.  They say "you'll never miss the water 'til the well runs dry."  Well, I'm pretty sure I'd miss the water, and I don't think it's necessary to wait for the well to dry-up before saying so.  Thanks Carl for all you do for the club: from taking care of all the various administrative details, to organizing Skate DC Weekend, to doing the club t-shirts, to leading skates on a regular basis.  I appreciate what you do very much, and at the risk of speaking on the behalf of others, I'm not the only one who does.

I regard the core of what this club does to be our regular skates.  As long as the regular skates continue, we justify our existence as an organization.  The skates will go on as long as there are people willing to lead them.  Thanks to Carl for leading this past Sunday's skate.  The skate and the weather were excellent.  Thanks to all of our skate leaders for keeping the skates going.

We need someone to step forward and lead the combined Inaugural Skate on Sunday, April 5, 2009.  If you would like to do that, please let me know, and I'll put you on the schedule.

As for this year's club t-shirt, I for one, would be OK with not having one.  I say this as someone with a closet stuffed to the point that, whenever I open it, I half expect to be bowled-over in an avalanche of skating t-shirts.  If someone is interested in doing t-shirts this year, and by that I don't mean interested in having one, but rather interested in doing all the work necessary to get them made, then we need he or she to step forward now.  It would make most sense for t-shirt distribution to be done at the Inaugural Skate (4/5/09), so there's not much time left.

Finally, I believe most of the work has already been done for Skate DC Weekend , which I regard as the second most important thing the club does.  Thanks again, Carl, and whoever else helped to put this year's edition together.

As long as the skates continue and Skate DC Weekend goes well, then I think the skating season should be considered successful.

Best wishes on finishing the home renovation project.

Cheers,
George

As many of you know, I have a home project that has been going on for
some time - long enough that I hear it's a running joke amongst some
of you. As many of you know, I have many things going on, which
contributes mightily to this condition. Fair enough.

Well, recent events have led me to look at everything I have going on.
   As part of this process, something has dawned on me. The same
people from whom I get crap about my home project, whether directly or
indirectly, are among those who benefit directly from some of my other
time-sucking activities, like leading skates and other work behind the
scenes to run the skate club.

When someone is riding you AND giving you crap for something caused by
the ride you give them, it is time to stop the ride.

Now I am probably the cause of this more than anyone else, but I must
fix it in a way that makes sense to me now.

I will be continuing as president of WAR (whatever that is worth), but
until my project at home is complete, the only things I will do for
the club are those that take no more time than typing and sending an
email. Once my project is finished, I will be happy to assist as
before.

I can think of a list of two things to do off-hand that someone must do:
1. design, take orders for, and order T-shirts, based on the
discussion at the Winter Meeting;
2. lead skates on days when I am scheduled;

I hope for your sake that I am finished by SkateDC Weekend.

Have fun.
