DC Inner City Excellence (DC ICE)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 27, 2009
DC ICE Joins Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid Committee, World Sport Chicago for
Youth Sports Day on Capitol Hill
Washington, DC Olympian Nathaniel Mills, youth from DC Skating Club to
demonstrate in-line skating for members of US Congressional Youth Sports
Caucus, promoting Olympic values and ideals
Washington, DC – While Congressional leaders debate how to manage
escalating health care costs, a pack of young skaters from Washington, DC
is joining their Olympian coach to demonstrate one solution: in-line
skating. On Wednesday, July 29, from 2:00-4:00pm, the DC Skating Club will
join the Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid Committee and World Sport Chicago to
promote the Olympic Movement and the value of sports-based youth
development. Organized by US Representative Mike McIntyre (North Carolina),
chair of the Congressional Youth Sports Caucus, and Up2Us, a new national
youth-sports coalition, Youth Sports Day on Capitol HIll brings together
Olympians, youth sports programs, Members of Congress and the public to
spotlight the benefits of bringing the 2016 Olympic Games to Chicago and
the potential legacy for youth sports. Youth Sports Day will be highlighted
by Olympian-led sports demonstrations, including in-line skating, a
finalist among new sports seeking admission to the Olympic Games roster
starting in 2016.
Over a dozen youth, ages 8 to 18, from the DC-ICE Skating Club will be
rolling over to Capitol Hill directly from Summer ICE Camp in Anacostia
Park. ICE stands for Inner City Excellence, the Olympism-based educational
program co-founded and Directed by three-time Olympian and educator
Nathaniel Mills, in collaboration with the non-profit Friends of Fort
Dupont Ice Arena. The summer-long ICE Camp is rooted in the Olympic values
of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship, and features Olympic-caliber
instruction in a variety of athletic, artistic, and academic disciplines,
including ice skating at Fort Dupont Ice Arena and in-line skating at the
Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion.
According to Mills, who qualified for and captained the 1998 Olympic Team
as a DC resident and who currently teaches in DC schools, ICE programs
nurture "Olympians in Life" by focusing on development of the whole child:
body, mind, and will. "Sport and play are basic human rights that are too
often denied to children living in urban environments. And while Congress
debates the pros and cons of health care reform, sports-based youth
development works at the root of the national health care problem,
fostering healthy habits in young people that can last a lifetime and
potentially remove the causes of incurring health care costs as adults.
This gets to the essence of Olympic Movement's goal of 'creating a more
peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.'" In
2004 Mills co-founded the Olympism Project with colleauges from the Olympic
and Paralympic Games to help make Olympic ideals real for more individuals,
particularly youth.
World Sport Chicago promotes, upholds, and advances the Olympic ideals in
every day life through active participation in Olympic and Paralympic
sports. The Chicago 2016 Bid Committee is the organization officially
seeking the privilege to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Chicago is competing for this honor alongside Rio de Janeiro (Brazil),
Tokyo (Japan), and Madrid (Spain).
DC Inner City Excitement, also known as DC-ICE, was established in 2002 in
the Nation's Capitol by parents living East of the Anacostia River in
collaboration with the Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena. Inspired by the
success of pioneering Olympic Champion Shani Davis, the founding parents
recruited three-time Olympic speedskater Nathaniel Mills to help form an
urban skating club for the purpose of keeping their children active. Buoyed
by multiple visits from Davis, including an appearance following his gold
medal-winning performance in the 2006 Olympics, DC-ICE now offers
year-round Inner City Excellence programs and events at FDIA and elsewhere,
including ICE Camps, the out-of-school-time ICE Academy, and the DC-ICE
Skating Club. ICE programs are driven by student volunteers, including many
from Washington, DC's School Without Walls, where Mills teaches "Global
Perspectives."
