George and WAR skaters,
yes, I think Marshall was with you today as you skated the inauguration. Skating was definitely his preferred way of traveling around the City. I hope you felt his spirit with you.
WAR meant so much to Marshall. I can't tell you that enough. So, on special occasions, like Inauguration, and 4th of July and other special days for us local DC people, you may find emails like this one...where i use the occasion as a way to keep Marshall and his memory here with us.
take care, and keep skating!
fondly,
Karin

Well said! Thank you, Karen.
I really wish Marshall could have been there today in person to enjoy it all.
A group of Washington Area Roadskaters were out skating today at the Inauguration and I think it very likely Marshall's spirit was with them as well.
Best Wishes,
George Marinkovich

1-20-09…
…this was once a saying on bumper stickers that Marshall and I would
occasionally see around the DC area a few years ago. And now, 1-20-09
has come. And, I know that Marshall is part of this day, this very
special day in our country.
Here in the National Capital Area, the place that Marshall and I came
to call "home" over the past 10+ years, this day and this weekend mean
a lot of things. For some, it means crowds and more crowds and closed
bridges and roads and delays. For others it means history in the
making. For me, it is a chance to be part of the brilliance of
American democracy.
Some friends and I trekked down to the District to be part of the
Inauguration Ceremony. No, I was not one of the lucky few thousand to
get tickets to see the Inauguration up close and personal at say 100
yards from the Capitol. No, I was part of the 100s of thousands who
packed the National Capital Mall. Didn't you see me on TV? I was
right there by the World War II Memorial, which is between the
Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. I witnessed the
Inauguration like most other people…I watched a televised version…but
my version was on a huge jumbotron, on 17th Street, with the
Washington Monument towering in the backdrop.
I tell you, it was simply amazing. It was amazing because on this
historic day, 1-20-09, I returned to one of the many places that
Marshall and I "toured" over the years as we made DC our home.
Sometimes we "toured" the city on bikes with our good friends Vince
and Christy. Other times we tooling around on skates with the
Washington Area RoadSkaters. And, many times we were on foot, with
our out-of-town families, showing them the sights of the Nation's
Capital. Like, September 2004, when my mom's family came down from
Wilmington to see the WWII Memorial for the first time…that was a
quintessential Marshall day…he was quietly in the lead, helping make
sure that the family knew where they were going, and enjoyed their
time in the city.
And, today, 1-20-09, at the WWI it was another quintessential day…
This time it was a quintessentially American day, where millions
(including me!) watched the peaceful transition of the Presidency of
the United States. Marshall would be proud to be an American
today…and, he would want to be downtown in the midst of it all.
So, as I stood there on the Mall, listening and watching the Inaugural
activities, with tears running down my frozen face, I thought of
Marshall, how he loved DC, how he loved skating around the National
Mall, the Monuments, Capitol Hill, and so many nooks and crannies and
alleys all across the city.
Today on 1-20-09, whatever your political views, as you watch coverage
of the Presidential Inauguration and see some of the sights in
Washington, DC, think of Marshall and this city that he came to call
home. Picture him on in-line skates or on foot, quietly, and
sometimes loudly, leading his family and friends around this amazing
city that was home to Marshall.
