All new skate leaders must first pass a rigorous three step test:
Step 1:
Hold a mirror or piece of glass up to the person's nose and mouth for
three minutes. The mirror or glass will fog up if the person is
breathing. If no breath is apparent, go to the next step.
Step 2:
Check for a pulse. Place two fingers to one side of the windpipe or to
the underside of the wrist on the thumb side. Feel for a pulse. If no pulse is apparent, go to the next step.
Step 3:
See if the pupils react to light. Shine a flashlight into the person's
open eyes. The pupils will become smaller in reaction to the light if
the person is not dead.
If you passed any one of the above tests, congratulations! You are a potential skate leader. If you failed all three tests, it might be a good idea to get someone nearby to administer CPR compressions immediately.
Seriously, the sole qualification for becoming a skate leader is the desire to do so.
We are fortunate to have a number of very capable skate leaders who would be happy to assist anyone wishing to join their ranks. Assistance is available for the asking, including a library of time-tested routes to use as is or as the basis of your own improvisation. To paraphrase "Field of Dreams:" if you lead it, they will follow. Give it a try, you just might find that you like it.
And yes, Fabio would make an excellent skate leader.
Great skate Bill, the year is off to a good start. The weather was actually kind of nice.
Cheers,
George

On Jan 4 we had an Elite Exclusive Special Sunday Skate, only for people who
were pre-approved as deserving participants. All others were shunned.
Participant List:
George M. WAR Head Skate Leader
Carl F. WAR President & frequent Skate Leader
Kent G. WAR Skate Leader
Jeffrey D. WAR Skate Leader
Bill E. WAR Skate Leader
Fabio S. Prospective New WAR Skate
Leader (whether he knows it or not!)
These Elite leading skaters came out even though temperature was in the
30's, with drizzle initially. Weather cleared up nicely and we had a good
skate to the Takoma Park Farmer's Market. 13 miles in under two hours. No
difficulties staying on the route and nobody crashed. Afterward George &
Carl had an even more exclusive lunch/board meeting!
Please contact George if you want to submit your application to be a WAR Skate
Leader (skatewash at yahoo.com). There is an opening for a new Wednesday leader
because Carl has a schedule conflict for the next few months.
Bill
