Where? We'll skate a loop starting on the north shore of the Severn River, into 'Naplis, to Quiet Waters Park, into East Port, downtown, and return to the starting point. Two distances will be available: 19 miles for the "regular" skate and up to 30 miles for those who are up for it. Meeting Place? We'll leave the New Carrolton Metro Station Kiss-and-Ride Parking Lot (near Route 50 and the Beltway) at 11:30 sharp. If you want to meet us in Annapolis, note that the skate will start at about 12:30 from the Parking Lot at MD-450 South and Boulters Way, about ¼ mile off of Route 50.

The Maryland Inline Skate Festival will be held on May 8th at Camden Yards in Baltimore for 1999. Joe Kramer will be looking for volunteers to assist with the instruction part of the event (12 to 4pm). In 1998, the instructors taught 280 students in a 4 hour period. At least 10 instructors are needed -- all levels welcome. Joe will start recruiting early next year and will offer a free refresher course in April to those that are interested in teaching. See the Cycle Across Maryland (CAM) web site for more info on the Festival.

Also, read this for info about the race at the event.

Friday, May 21 to Sunday, May 22: Skate of the Union Weekend
WAR has organized a set of skating events for the weekend of this year's Skate of the Union:

Friday, 7pm - Washington Monument Skate - White House
Here is a chance to see the city like you never have before! This skate will wind around the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian Museum, the Capitol Building, and the White House. This route is relaxed and is punctuated with frequent stops. Come and enjoy a summer evening on the Mall.

Friday, 11pm - Moonlight Madness Skate - White House
Ever wonder what kind of creatures come out at night in DC? Here is your chance to skate with them. This advanced skate will lead through the neighborhoods of DuPont Circle, Georgetown, and Adams Morgan. For this route, skaters must be proficient with stopping and hills. Come out for a howling good time!

Saturday, 7:30am - Skate of the Union '99 - Chantilly, VA
The main event. See below for details. (This is not a WAR event.)

Saturday, 9pm - WAR Post-SOTU Party - Townhouse Tavern
We will be having a "get together" at the Townhouse Tavern on Saturday night at 8pm. The Townhouse Tavern is near the corner of 17th St. and R St.(1637 R St. NW to be exact)

We will be on the 3rd floor and there will be drink specials for those weary skaters. Townhouse is also a great leaping point if you are interested in hitting the town - Adams Morgan and DuPont Circle.

We support Townhouse because they support skaters (they let us in w/o hassle) but they have asked skaters to come with shoes - 3 flights of stairs and a ton of skaters is a recipe for disaster - especially if there are drinks involved!

In any case - Come on by even if you don't make it to Chantilly. Should be a good time!

Sunday, 9am - WAR/MASF Fitness skate - White House
Join the Mid Atlantic Speed and Fitness skaters and the WAR/NRG speed team for a quick zip out of the city and back. The speeds will be quick, but the draft lines will be long. Come out and put some speed in your life! (about 18 miles)

Sunday, 11am - Traditional WAR Sunday Skate - White House
We will be capping off this exciting weekend with two skates leaving from the White House on Sunday Morning. The first skate will be an easy trek around the city where you can mingle with new friends and enjoy the summer days on the banks of the Potomac River. The second skate will be a bit more advanced and a bit farther as we look to escape the city and hit the neighborhoods. Both skates will be the perfect final topping to the best skate weekend in DC ever!

For lodging, contact the Howard Johnson, 2601 Virginia Ave (by the Watergate), 202-965-2700.

Saturday, May 22: Skate of the Union

Sunday, September 12: Great State Skate
Announcing for the first time ever - the Great State Skate!!!!

This Sunday Morning at 11:30am the President of the Washington Area Rollerskaters (Marshall Brown) will lead the first ever Great State Skate.

This is a chance to skate on 40 different streets in the District named after one of this country's great states.

We will be starting from the White House and heading through DuPont Circle - Up towards American University - Towards Bethesda - Cut Across Rock Creek by Silver Spring and Make our way back down by Catholic University. The distance will run from 30 - 35 miles, and there will be many turns. It is recommended that you have been on at least one previous Sunday distance (1pm) Skate before trying this one out. It is also recommended that you bring a water supply, and munchies that you might need. We will stop when we can, but it may be slim pickings.

We will be joined by the Philadelphia Landskaters who are coming down for the Day.

After the skate we will pick a restaurant with outdoor seating and have a relaxing lunch/dinner. I'm hoping to be done with the skate by 4pm.

At that time there will be a contest for a full set of Ablaze Wheels (the one's that light up when you roll on them). Anyone who can name the 10 states that we didn't skate on will have their name placed in a basket for a lottery - the winner will walk (or roll) away with the wheels.

So - You are invited for this challenge! It should be fun. Again we will leave at 11:30 promptly (1/2 hour later than the beginner skate). This has been planned in leu of the normal 1 o'clock skate so there will not be a leader out at 1pm.

Marshall Brown

Saturday, September 18: W&OD Skate
We'll meet at Shirlington around 9 am, caravan to Purcellville, and skate 45+ miles back to Shirlington on the W&OD Trail. We'll need to rent a van to take us to P'ville, so this one will cost a few bucks. WAR members only.

Sunday, October 10: Athens to Atlanta
A bunch of DC skaters head to Georgia for the annual A2A skate marathon.

Saturday, October 30: Eastern Shore Road Trip
What? Join WAR for a repeat of last year's So-Long-to-Summer skate near St. Michaels on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The distance will be 28 miles. The roads are flat, have excellent pavement (except for 3 infamous miles), and have wide bike lanes. We plan to skate at a brisk pace with just two rest stops. If you (or your friends) aren't up for skating it, come out on your bikes!

Where? We'll skate the same loop as last year: from St. Michaels to Easton, south to historic Oxford, where we'll cross the Tred Avon River by ferry, and return to St. Mikes. It took about 3-1/2 hours last year, including the wait for the ferry boat. Afterward we'll again adjourn to the Crab Claw Restaurant for seafood (or burgers) and beer (or whatever).

Meeting Place? The skate will start at about 12 noon from the Municipal Parking Lot at Talbot and Mill Streets in St. Michaels. (If the lot is full, additional parking is available farther down Mill St.) For those who'd like to caravan, we'll leave the New Carrolton Metro Station Kiss-and-Ride Parking Lot (near Route 50 and the Beltway) at 10:00 sharp.

What to Bring? Carry some fluids (water stops are about 10 miles apart; this ain't DC folks!). Bring money for Bay Bridge toll ($2.50), ferry boat ($1), and eats (the restaurant deals in cash only!).

Tuesday, December 7: Board Meeting

Representatives from Easter Seals and a few Local Skating reps will be on hand as we start to discuss next year's Skate of the Union. We will be brainstorming how the event will look and set up a few committees to work with the Easter Seals people to help set this thing up.

Also -

  1. We will be discussing the WAR Elections (to be held/finalized in January and setting a date for the Annual meeting - apx. dates...) - One major issue - Number of Board Members to be elected.

  2. We need to finalize a date for the Winter social - Late January/Feb. and figure out what and where we want to have it.

  3. I have the ability to purchase a bunch of helmets (cheap!) and we need to decide if WAR wants to spend a bit to re-sell to those who may want to buy helmets.

  4. Finally - We need to discuss the state of the Skates - How are they going and if there is anything we need to do to improve them.

We have a lot of stuff for this agenda, and we would like to have your input. Last time we had some great beer and sandwiches - and had some fun as well.

Hope to see all of you there!
