The Federal Highway Administration is doing research to determine design standards for accessible bike paths/trails. We ll measure the size, speed, acceleration, braking and turning ability of all sorts of devices (inline skates, skateboards, bicycles, tricycles, strollers, wheelchairs, scooters, powerscooters, handcycles). Volunteers will be videotaped traveling and maneuvering through several stations using their own equipment and proper safety devices.

Volunteers (13 years or older) are needed to participate in this study. Participants will be eligible for prizes.

It takes about 30 min. to complete the course.

Sat, 3   7AM-7PM Kent (Almost) Breaks World Record! led by: Paula Tozzi <skating4ms@aol.com>
Kent Baake (current 24 hrs distance WR holder) is going for it again... This time his goal is to skate 200 miles to break the 12 hr record which currently stands at 195 miles. Also Dana Eads of San Diego, CA will attempt to break the 6 hour World Record. Dana will be skating over 110 miles to break the standing record (106 miles).Hopefully you'll be able to come on by to cheer them on!

Both Kent and Dana will be skating to raise funds to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Kent is skating in honor of our friend Marcie Shields, who passed away recently due to complications involving MS. If you want to make a donation please email for more details.

I am organizing the volunteer team, so if you are available, please contact Paula via email. We'll be sure to need lots of help throughout the day!

Location: Very close to DC (skate/bike accessible) in the Del Rey neighborhood of Alexandria, Va (One block east of the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and E. Del Ray Ave.).

Intermediate approximately 9 miles in 2 hours, Advanced approximately 12 miles in 2 hours. The first Sunday of each month will have shorter, less hilly routes than the other Sunday tours during the whole 2003 season. WAR is relaxing the difficulty of these skates in order to encourage skaters to try advancing up to a new skating group.

10K inline race. Race 1 of 9. Two categories, one for elite/advanced, one for fitness/recreational (plus a 2K inline race for children 12 & under).

This is a great series, not only for experienced racers, but for novice racers as well since there is a fitness/recreational division. Take advantage of this local series to hone your skills or learn new ones.

We will skate by Union Station, Howard University, Grant Circle, Rock Creek Church Road and Mount Pleasant, Upper Dupont Circle area. This skate has some hills. Distance: 12 miles.
Food/pizza and drink at Froggy Bottom at 9pm after the skate. $15 per person, collected at entrance. Skates permitted inside.

DC to Alexandria. This skate is 20-23 miles and has some challenging uphills and equally fun downhills. Once we reach Old Town Alexandria (mile 12-14), we will skate to a Metro station for those who want to take a train back to the hotel. We will skate along the mall and pass the Korean War and Lincoln Memorials, the Pentagon, Crystal City, the George Washington Masonic Temple in Old Town, and National Airport. When we return to DC we will skate along side Rolling Thunder.

We will skate by the Convention Center, Meridian Hill Park, Adams Morgan, Embassy Loop, and Sheridan Circle. Distance: 9 miles. This skate will conclude by 7pm.

After the skate, many will attend the National Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol between 8pm and 9:30pm. Check out the National Park Service Calendar for more details about the concert (scroll down to May 25 to find info, it is a very extensive calendar).

9pm: Those interested will convene for dinner at Tony Cheng's Mongolian BBQ.

Fri, 30   5:00 PM Liberty Skate Weekend led by: Empire Skate Club of New York <empire@empireskate.org>
May 30-June 1. Liberty Skate Weekend is an annual three-day event filled with activities for skaters of all skill levels, including group skates, raffles, product give-aways, and opportunities to try the newest equipment for free. It takes place the first weekend each June. All events are free and are open to both Empire members and non-members. The weekend peaks on Sunday with the Easter Seals Roll, a fundraising skate in which participants raise money to help disabled children and adults, and have the rare opportunity to skate through a car-free Lincoln Tunnel and enjoy spectacular views of the city.
