Fri, 4   7 PM Friday Night Beginner Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
Welcome Washington Post Weekend Section readers!

We especially welcome new skaters to come skate with us! The Friday Night Beginner Skate is the perfect introduction to our skates. The weather should be nice and warm so bring water to stay hydrated.

Join us tonight (6/5/10) at the White House (on the closed-off-to-traffic portion of Pennsylvania Ave between the front entrance of the White House and Lafayette Park). We begin the 9-mile skate at 7 PM, visiting The Capitol, Washington Monument, WW II Memorial, Korean Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. It's a fun social skate geared to beginning skaters. We will have a sweep (someone who skates at the rear of the group) to ensure that we don't lose any skaters.

We do skate on the streets so you need to be aware of traffic at all times, even though traffic is fairly light during the time we skate. We highly recommend wearing all the safety equipment (helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads) and you must know how to control your speed and stop. Bring sandals or flip-flops if you would like to join us at Froggy Bottom Pub after the skate. Bicycles and other wheeled vehicles are welcome.

Friday Night Beginner's Skate Route (leaves White House at 7 PM returns at around 9 PM)

When we reach the intersection of Ohio Dr. and Buckeye Dr. in East Potomac Park, some skaters will wait there while other skaters do an extra 3 mile loop around Hains Point.

Sat, 5   11 AM Skate Across Maryland (twice!) led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
Announcing the Skate Across Maryland (SAM). We start in Hancock, Maryland, skate over to West Virginia, skate back into Maryland, up into Pennsylvania, and then back into Maryland. When we finish we will have traversed the State of Maryland twice, while visiting another state (West Virginia) and a commonwealth (Pennsylvania).

It's a long way to Hancock, MD, to just skate across Maryland twice, so for those looking for additional skating (or perhaps instead of the SAM) my recommendation is to skate the scenic western half of the WMRT.

"Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and Columbia Heights" Skate Route (9.5 miles)

One short, but steep, uphill at Meridian Hill Park (climbing stairs is an option) and one long and reasonably gentle downhill from Adams Morgan on Champlain. It's going to be hot and humid so please stay hydrated. There's a planned water stop at Argyle Convenience Store two-thirds of the way into the skate. The skate can be shortened if the heat is killing us.
