Sat, 2   9 am Saturday Morning Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
This skate is CANCELED today due to rain and wet conditions on the trail.

The semi-regular Saturday Morning Skate. There will be another skate this Saturday starting at 9 AM at the Georgetown end of the Capital Crescent Trail. We will meet at the beginning of the CC Trail in Georgetown which is on Water Street essentially underneath the Whitehurst Freeway near where it intersects with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

We skate to the top of the CC Trail in Bethesda where we get breakfast stuff on Bethesda Avenue and meet up near the water fountain in front of Barnes and Noble at the corner of Bethesda Ave. and Woodmont Ave. From there we return to Georgetown on the CC Trail. It's approximately a 12 mile skate and takes roughly 2 to 2 1/2 hours depending on how long it takes to get breakfast in Bethesda. As this is a trail skate feel free to skate at your own pace.

Sun, 3   11 am Sunday Intermediate Skate led by: Bill English
The regular Sunday Intermediate Skate. It is an intermediate level street skate of about 8-10 miles which finishes around 1PM. This skate maintains pace designed to be a workout for an average street skater. The terrain includes some moderate hills such as Capitol Hill and may include high-traffic areas such as Georgetown. There are several stops to regroup and before tricky turns. If you can keep up with our Friday night skate, and get to the end without feeling tired or exhausted, you can probably keep up with this skate. Skate Patrol assists with this skate and helps keep the group together. Difficulty can vary widely depending on the route chosen by the leader. Please see the fuller description under Skates.

Sat, 9   9:30 am Special Saturday Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>

The Western Maryland Rail Trail in Hancock, Maryland
A very scenic 42 miles of trail to skate, starting in Hancock, Maryland. The route would be out-and-back so you can pick your own mileage. It has excellent pavement, and pretty views of the Potomac River and West Virginia. There are places to eat in Hancock, plus there're great pies and local fruit at a
nearby country store (Hepburn Orchard) on the way home.
Western Maryland Rail Trail
It's about one hour and forty-eight minutes (100 miles) to Hancock from DC.

Meet-up in the parking lot (described below) at 9:30 am on Saturday, August 9, 2008.

Driving directions to Hancock, Md: Map Quest Directions

General Directions:
Take I-270 N
Merge onto I-70 W (Exit 32 towards Hagerstown)
Take MD-144 W (Exit 3 on the LEFT towards Hancock)
Make slight right onto East Main St.
Pass C&O Canal Visitor Center on your right (326 E. Main St., Hancock, MD 21750).
Take first left into parking lot after passing Center St.

I suggest parking in Hancock at this parking lot
(Starting Location) on East Main St. (Rt. 144), the first left after Center St. traveling west. It's not much of a parking lot to look at but its saving grace is that it's free. It is necessary to walk some 50 feet or so over gravel from the parking lot to the trail proper.

I would suggest skating west toward Pearre from the parking lot as far as you wish (up to 12 miles), turn around and skate back to the start. You can then stop or skate east toward Big Pool (up to 9 miles). In this way you can skate as little as you want or as much as 42 miles (the entire trail). I would roughly plan to skate about 3.5 hours. There are places to eat in town afterward.

Let me know if you're interested. Possibly we could form carpools to save gas and provide transportation for the car-challenged.

If the weather for Hancock turns ugly, the skate could possibly be relocated to somewhere closer to the DC area (Baltimore and Annapolis, or W&OD perhaps).

More info: Bike Washington Trails

Cheers,
George

Sat, 23   9:30 am Shady Grove to White House led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
This Saturday (8/23/08) will see the return of the
SHADY GROVE TO WHITE HOUSE skate. This is my favorite
trail skate and follows Rock Creek through some
beautiful scenery. The weather looks to be very good
this Saturday

The skate leaves the station at 9:30 am.

RSVP if you're interested.

New Info:

It's about 30 miles and takes about 4 hours.
There is an elevation loss of about 450 ft., but there are plenty of uphills along the way. The skate can be shortened to 20 miles by taking the metro from Bethesda back to Shady Grove.
Route map:

WHO:
Anyone and everyone who wants to skate 30
miles, mostly downhill (although unfortunately there are
several hills that we skate in the wrong direction)
from Shady Grove Metro Station to the White House.

WHEN:
9:30am on Saturday, August 23, 2008. We will be meeting
before 9:30am, because at 9:30am the skate will be leaving
the station. Please plan to arrive early especially if
you'll be taking the metro because the metro has a way of
taking longer than you'd expect.

WHERE:
We will meet at the Kiss and Ride bus shelter
on the west side of the Shady Grove Metro Station
(),
which is the western terminus of the Red Line in
Maryland. Note to previous participants: this is the
same place we met previous years.

Arriving by Metro:
As you pass through the metro card reader gates upon
exiting from the platform make a left turn (toward the
west exit) and take the stairs up to the bus shelter.
We will be gathering at the Kiss and Ride bus shelter.
Note that this is the side of the metro station that
does not have the large parking garages.

Arriving by Car:

If you re coming north on I-270, get into the local
lanes on the righthand side of I-270 at your earliest
opportunity, then take the Redland Road exit, cross
Frederick Road (Rt. 355) and make the next left on
Sommerville Road into the Shady Grove Metro Station
Parking lot (west side). Parking is free on Saturday.

If you re coming south on I-270, then take the I-370
exit. You will arrive at the east side of the Shady
Grove Metro Station, follow signs to the parking
garage but don t enter the parking garage. Instead
after passing the parking garage leave the east side
of the Metro Station by making the first right turn
you can. Turn right on Redland Road and make the first
right you can onto Somerville Road into the parking
lot for the west side of the Shady Grove Metro
Station.

WHAT:
We will be skating from the Shady Grove Metro
Station to the White House by skating down the Rock
Creek Hiker-Biker Trail and the Capital Crescent
Trail. Note there are two bail-out points that will
allow you to return to Shady Grove Metro Station (or
wherever you came from) without completing the full
skate.

The skate is approximately 30 miles, taking
approximately 4 hours, not too difficult considering
the route is mainly downhill. Due to the distance and
the need to control one s speed on descents, I guess
this would be considered an intermediate/advanced
skate. However, all skaters who know how to stop
confidently are welcome, since there are bail-out
points along the way for skaters who find the distance
or pace to be tiresome. As always, non-complaining
skaters are particularly appreciated:-)

Please see the August 23, 2008, posting on the Email
List for more information.
