Events in April

Fri, 2   7 PM Friday Night Beginner Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
Expecting glorious weather (high of 81!) for the first Friday Night Skate of the year. Not to mention lovely Cherry Blossoms. Join us...

Please carry shoes (sandals, flip-flops, etc.) with you if you intend on joining us at Froggy Bottom Pub at the end of the skate.

On-street parking free after 6:30 PM available on the streets marked with blue on this map. Read the parking signs carefully. Skate east on Pennsylvania Ave. to the start of the skate at the White House.

If you need to reach me: three.zero.one - three.six.seven - eight.three.seven.four

New Friday Night Beginner's Skate Route (leaves White House at 7 PM returns at around 9 PM)

I'll be using the following route for the Friday Night Skate when I lead. The route may change in the future as we explore other alternatives (and specifically when construction around the Tidal Basin is completed). For now it is the safest, most gentle skate route I could put together that follows the traditional route as much as possible.

The new route avoids the 15th St. downhill entirely. We eliminate the Ellipse, but otherwise the route is the same until we arrive at the Washington Monument. We stay on Mall pathways and go up to the Washington Monument itself and then over to the World War II Memorial. From there we take a Mall pathway around the Korean Memorial, cross Independence Ave., and take Ohio Dr.. to the intersection with Buckeye Dr in East Potomac Park. There skaters can choose to do the extra 3 mile Hains Point loop or not. We then backtrack on Ohio Dr. to the Lincoln Memorial and from that point the rest of the traditional skate route remains unchanged.

Sun, 4   11 AM Sunday Intermediate Skate led by: George Marinkovich <skatewash@yahoo.com>
Sunday (4/3/10) Intermediate Skate Route, leaves White House at 11 AM, led by George Marinkovich.

This route explores parts of the final two Friday Night Skate route alternatives (with much less horrible pavement than two weeks ago, sorry about that!): Case Bridge and East of Tidal Basin. It will feature beautiful cherry blossoms and will be an easy skate on par with a Friday Night Skate. While there's not much in the way of hills (with the possible exception of coming down off of the Case Bridge), we will be skating through some throngs of people at the Cherry Blossom Festival.

It is an intermediate level street skate of about 8-10 miles which finishes around 1 PM. This skate maintains a pace designed to be a workout for an average street skater. The terrain includes some moderate hills such as Capitol Hill and may include high-traffic areas such as Georgetown. There are several stops to regroup and before tricky turns. Difficulty can vary widely depending on the route chosen by the leader. Please see the description under Regular Skates for further details.

Sat, 24   12 noon Rock Creek Park Clinic led by: Danny Donoghue <thecanadian@juno.com>
What better way to learn how to skate than WAR's free clinic? While not intended to be a full service skating school, volunteers including certified instructors teach basic and intermediate skills and useful stopping and skating techniques. Lessons are capped off by a short skate in the park where we review the "rules of the road" to prepare students for our Friday night skates.
